We have walked along the river many times coming and going to various sites and the island in the middle of the river has been functioning since 293 BCE when a temple dedicated to Aesculapius, god of healing and protector against the plague was built there. There is still a hospital there. There are two bridges to take you on to the island as you can see, one that was built in 62 BCE and still in use.
