The piazza was designed to clean up and make more grand the Capitol of the city so Michelangelo created new facades for the buildings and added a third to make the whole thing contained and symmetrical. The tops of the buildings feature sculptures that are copies of sculptures to be found elsewhere in Rome. Michelangelo lived only to see the steps up to the plaza completed. It was not completed until the 17th century mostly keeping to his designs. The piazza faces West towards St. Peters. It houses the Capitoline Museum.
