Rome is one giant archaeological gold mine. Our guide told us that they are digging a new subway line that they started in 1985 and they are nowhere near finished as every time they find some archaeological remains they must stop work and call in the experts to examine and preserve. This is an excavation at the Palatine behind the colosseum.
