Greek Theatre, Syracuse, 5th century BCE

As spectacular as this theatre looks today it was even more so in its day. First, you can still see the sea though there are tall buildings now blocking some of the view and in the 16th century Emperor Charles V took away much of the stone to build walls around Ortigya to defend it. The great playwrights such as Aeschylus premiered his tragedies here. It is used to stage Greek plays now every two years in the summer.
