Walls with Catacomb Niches

Walls with added catacomb niches, Byzantine

In addition to the Romans taking parts of the wall for other purposes the early Christians carved niches to use as necropoli for their important dead. The Carthaginians built ramps outside the walls to scale them to sack the whole complex and used the stones from Greek tombs that were below the hill to build them so there are no remnants of Greek tombs here.
